I’m not sure who comes to this blog anymore. I was surprised by the large amount of hits this blog received, reflecting from its circulation which I have to thank my friends for as well as the great solidarity and support network that activists share.
The recent events in Gaza have been gruesome and extremely difficult to watch. Of course this is not a new atrocity. In fact this has not been the most brutal atrocity I have been alive to witness. The atrocities of Rwanda were far more brutal, long lasting, and the response disgusting apathy and selfishness. I couldn’t imagine something like that occurring now. Yet violence is spurring in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) that is a direct result of that first slaughter.
What words can I use to define the current events? Unfair? Unjust? Do we know what is fair anymore? Can we recognize justice?
It is a time when it is easy to feel defeated. During the events leading up to the Iraq invasion countries all over the world, including this one, had millions repeatedly pouring out to protest against the possibility that Iraq would be invaded. Yet this government still made the decision. How does that reflect a democracy? This government is easily wooed by rich corporate lobbyists, special-interest groups with deep pockets, and other bribes. How is that not corruption? The Senate unanimously passed a resolution supporting Israel’s actions. The Senate passes a unanimous resolution supporting the actions of a foreign government not directly tied with the United States when 1% of the population of the United States is Jewish. How is that democratic? It’s almost like you can hear Congress saying “Let’s pass this quick to make AIPAC happy, I got a lunch with Exxon to attend.”
I don’t know what else to say. Except that during these times we need to support each other. We need to learn to analyze our own actions, and not just the actions of “the other” and “they” because we are all connected, and have faith. Because justice is and always will be on our side.
